Tutorial : How to Create a Print Ready Invite with Bleeds

This tutorial will take you through setting up a document , creating bleed area , and working while keeping it in mind , along with some tips and tricks . A very bright sunny simple tutorial.

Source file can also be downloaded which is accessible to our premium members of Aivault (more info at aivault site).

This Final PREVIEW , what we are going to create!

Step 1

Since i am creating a basic 7 inch x 5 inch card i will keep my dimensions of the art board the same.

Create a new document , with crop marks added . I have chosen to have .375 inch crop marks all over , below is a screen shot of my document settings.

Step 2

Create a rectangle , to the full width and height don't forget to add the crop marks all around. in this case i will add .375in x 2 to the file size which is 7x5 inch ie the rectangle size which will be the background of the card will be 7.75in x 5.75 in.

Step 3

My background rectangle now must be perfectly aligned along the crop marks so i am using the Align panel , see below my selection? i am keeping the ALIGN to selection to Align to art-board. After that select align object second option from left and Distribute objects second option from left . Well of course there are many ways to align it perfectly but this is how did this with this design.... :)

Step 4

I start off by creating a random shaped box which will be the text area. I used the pen tool to create it just roughly we can always adjust it once the other elements of design are in place.

Step 5

And now the fun part! adding elements of design , yum yum i chose this cool little vector pack from AiFactory

The sun looks so adorable and full of fun! I just copy and pasted it into the artwork .And decided to create clouds on my own.

Step 6

Select the shape tool and draw some random circles nothing specific here.

Step 7

Hmmm rotating these might make the shape more interesting what do you think?

Step 8

And then just hit unit in the pathfinder tool window. which you can always access through Windows> Path Finder. I love love love this Tool!

Step 9

Give the shape a bit of color. Nice blue color isn't it?

Step 10

And one of my fav is the mesh tool , just click anywhere where you would like to add color . remember if you would like to keep the shape for a later use create and reserve a copy of it as once it is Meshed up you cant add any strokes!. I wish it doesnt do that!! .People at Adobe listen to me please ! Or am i missing something please share if i am....

Step 11

After you click randomly anywhere shift the color triangles to choose a lighter color.

And repeat

And repeat Simple right! , lovely shading ..!! Yum!

Step 14

I decided to give the cloud a little bit of transparency , you can choose not to if you like ... i dont mind ;)

Step 15

Copy , paste , resize

What they say two is a company three is a crowd? .. hmm not really looks ok to me ...

Step 16

Now i see the Text Area that i created can be scaled further to give text more space. Use the Direct selection tool to shape it up scale it up and hmmm space it up ..:)

I create a copy of this shape and pasted in front

The earlier copy is given a bit of Grey shade ... why?.. just to add a bit of interest...

Step 19

Type in the text , Whatever!

Step 20

And a bit of more interest? another cloud added here... you can choose not to if you don't mind and drop any other related graphic from the set.

Step 21

I used the Pen tool to create some more simple and random shapes ... again for the sake of some more design elements. no rules here.

Step 22

And another , using pen tool it is really easy you must just click pen tool at one point then on another then on another and when you come back to the first click you will see a little "o" near your pointer this means that this last click will close the shape . it is important that all shapes are closed once it goes to the printer. so just keep an eye on open paths .

TIP:- in order to join open paths click on the loose ends of the path using CTRL and then hit CTRL + J to join them

Question :- How do you know there are open paths?

Answer :- let me continue with this tutorial go ahead and find your answer HERE!

Step 23

More random shapes! and yes a bit of transparency.

Select the shapes and transform it to be exactly 7.75 width.

Step 24

Draw a rectangle along the lower path.

Step 25

Create a small rectangle in same height as the green bar below , click and create a copy while you drag it towards left while pressing shift .

Hit CTRL + D to repeat your last step and achieve bars in a row.

How to flip cliparts and digital stamps in mircrosft word

Some times you do want to flip digital elements of designs , can be a digital stamp or a clipart which needs a mirrored image.I recently received an email from a customer who purchased the wings digital stamps / cliparts pack and was wondering how she can flip them to create a pair of wings.

There are many ways to customize your graphics here are few

here is how to customize your clipart / digital stamps in microsoft word in a later tutorial i will show you how this

To see the Clip Art task pane, on the Insert
menu,
point to
Picture and then click Clip art. or browse to place the newly downloaded clipart.

Display clip-related toolbars

The Picture and Drawing toolbars make adjusting images simple by providing all of the tools you need in one location.

To locate these toolbars and display them on your screen, on the View menu, select Picture. This will display the toolbar on screen. Repeat to display the Drawing toolbar.

Customizing your clip art

Now that you have imported your image into the word there are a few ways to make it more customized according to your needs.

Cropping

When you crop an image, you are removing any areas of it that you
don't want to be shown.

To crop a clip

Select the clip in your document.
On the Picture toolbar, click the Crop button.
Place the mouse pointer over one of the black squares around the
edge of the clip. Then click and drag until you have cropped the clip
to the desired area.

To resize a clip

Select the clip.
Move your mouse pointer over one of the open circles around the edge of the image.
Click and drag the image to your desired size.
Note To
resize an image proportionally, select one of the open circles located
at a corner. Resizing by clicking one of the side points causes the
image to grow or shrink disproportionately.

To rotate a clip

Select the clip.
On the Picture toolbar, click Rotate Left.
Click once to rotate the clip 90 degrees to the left. Continue to click until the clip is in the position you want.
Note This task can also be done through the Drawing toolbar.

To flip a clip

Select the clip.
On the Drawing toolbar, click the Draw button, point to Rotate or Flip, and then click the option you want.

To add a drop shadow

Select the clip.
On the Drawing toolbar, click the Shadow Style button and select the style that you want.
Note To remove a drop shadow, click Shadow Style and then select No Shadow.

New Digital stamps added

Although this digital stamp set was to be released a bit earlier but somehow i got lost in time .. LOL , here are two new additions to the store these are digital stamp sets. Here is one for easter

And another one that i think is versatile in terms of creative possibilities is a floral cliparts or graphic set which of course you can use as a digital stamp as well . I have already received suggestions that this one will make a great photoshop brushes set but for that you will have to wait as i would like to make a bigger photoshop brushes set rather than having just 4 in one !

"I bought this rub on stuff from a friend, its a4 and you print your image onto the matt side of the a4 page, then you apply adhesive to this. its a two/three step process.
im not sure i would buy it again though, as I am not thrilled that you can see the adhesive.
i dont use rub ons that often so maybe this is an issue with all of them?

I know things can get quite difficult when you have tons and tons of stuff to do at home , my usual day goes starts around 5 in the morning and till i fall into bed around 10 at night i am completely exhausted!

My youger son is sort of the cuddly type and he will stick around me full day , he wants to play with me and get me involved in everything that he does! and i want to enjoy it as much as i can . As a i know after a while when he is all grown up i and heads off to his busy life i will have these wonderful memories of wonderful times we have spent together :) . Digital Stamps Tips & Tricks # 01

There are times when you have a digital image and sometimes you don't want an element on it. For instance, when you have a bouquet of flowers but you only want one flower how do you change that? Well, every PC has the program "Paint" on it. Copy your digital stamp and paste it into "Paint". When you have it in that program you can erase whatever part of the image you want to. You can even color the image from that program. When you are done just copy and paste it into a Word document and print from there. If you have Paint.net (which is a free and wonderful program) then here's a tutorial on how you can add multiple digi's onto one area.

If you have been a reader of aivault you might already know that most of my illustrations and works in one way or another does included flowers and ornaments . And now my fascination with ornaments and flowers have grown more intense i guess , and is now more mixed with the grungy look of objects that i like ! .Hence the creation of frames which are floral , ornamental and grungy at the same time. The preview presented below will show you 9 corners which i created using Lace Brushes & Floral Brushes that i created earlier.
Possibilties of creating many more are endless though :) but here i present to you a collection of 9 corners which can be used to frame any cornered shape rectangle or square. I wanted to create some artwork using these and then show it off but at the moment here it is! The Ornate Distressed corners for photographer resources or photography editors! . Featured Artist At Aifactory - Laurie Wilson- the interview

We at aifactory are very honoured to have great creative minds working and providing cool content at aifactory store . So in honour of these artists we are running Artist in spotlight feature at the AIF blog .
This week we are featuring ever so talented Laurie Wilson. I came to know Laurie through her work and she when she mailed me cards that she created using AIF images i was instantly in love with her work!
Laurie's Brand at Aifactory store is Clearly Deslightful Designs , she has her own blog which is quite popular as well . We sure are happy to have her at AIF!

AIF needed to know more about her so we went on over to her place (virtually) , and over a warm cup of coffee (virtually...yummm!) , in a very cozy work environment we asked her some questions in order to know more about her.

Tell us something about yourself and how and when you got involved in digital illustrations and designs?

I am a SAHM (stay at home mom), 35, married to a Texan who is gracious in letting me continue my crafting adventures. I started illustrating in October 2007, with my first release on December 1 2008, for an online clear stamp company. I enjoy crafting paper projects as well as illustrating.

Tell us something about your characters? what is your source of inspiration?

I feel that my style of illustrations has a wide range from cute to realistic. I also feel that my illustrations have developed over the past 3 years, as I became more experienced with certain images and styles. Many times, I will see something in nature, outdoors, or while I am at the grocery store which often lead into some image or idea in my head and I try to keep thinking on it until I get home to sketch it out before I forget it.

The little giraffe, for instance, I had recently seen a cute giraffe on the news and I studied him as quicly as I could and then searched for some more photos on the internet to get an idea of the proportions of his body and certain characterisitcs portrayed in facial expressions.

Flowers are everywhere and so I find those pretty easy to draw up in my head, especially with my own flowers around the house to look at and watch how they grow and change.

Which is your favorite item that you have listed here at Aifactory?

I think right now, it is the giraffe. Although he has a lot of fine detail, the end result of coloring him is quite rewarding as a finished craft item.

How have grown tremendously in the past year , where do you see yourself in future?

My goal is to provide a nice variety of illustrated images and to continue to keep paper crafting and illustrating as equally balanced as possible.

What kind of images you will be uploading here at Aifactory in the coming days?

Cartooney furniture is on my drawing board, as well as more flowers and animals.

What is your process of creating digital images? which softwares do you use?

All my final illustrations are drawn digitally in Adobe Illustrator using a Wacom pen tablet, whether they start out as a hand sketch or an image in my head.

Walk us through your typical workday?

Workday? LOL! My workday is basically my home life with a twist. I get up, feed and play with kids (if my husband hasn't already done that). I'll get my coffee and sit down at the computer and look through emails. I may start or continue a few illustrations that I have been working on, and then maybe create a card or two, then it is back to tending to the kids--lunchtime, naps, etc. I just fit my work into my daily activities. I have my calendar filled with things due on certain days for the whole month and I just plug away at that, getting things done early as I can manage it. Some days, I don't even sit down at my craft table or computer.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Watercoloring Ella Tutorial

Hello AIF fans! My name is Laurie, and my new friend Mia asked if I would contribute a tutorial to her blog about coloring. Just so you know, I am not a "certified" professional of watercoloring or anything like that, LOL. But I have discovered that some people seem to like the simple techniques that I apply to my images (based on the sweet comments they leave for me) and it delights me to share them with you today. I hope you are a little inspired, even if watercoloring with markers isn't your preferred medium choice.
This way of coloring is easy, and I think anyone can do them if they put their heart to it! Especially since you will have step by step photos to follow along with.

So, here is my completed card below. I have posted this card on my personal blog with card supplies if that interests you, HERE. But below, I have outlined the steps I took to color and the tools I used.

First, I used the new Love you Ella digital stamp set HERE from AI Factory.Close up of sweet Ella!Before I get started, I will list out the essential supplies needed for the watercoloring.

Markers made for watercoloring, I use Tombow here, but have used Stampin' Up! brand in the past
Watercolor paper, I use 90 lb. Canson brand and find it to have exceptional blending ability
Waterbrush, I use Yasutomo brand and the second smallest round tip size

(To complete a project, you would need other supplies like your carstock, papers, embellishments, adhesives, snip scissors, etc.)

To prepare your waterbrush, unscrew the cap and fill the reservoir with distilled water. Some brands have a little piece of plastic in between the screw on cap and the reservoir that has a very tiny hole. It is difficult to get the water in THAT hole, so you use a fingernail to loosen that plastic piece up and slide off the reservoir. Then you have a larger hole for adding the water. Replace the little plastic piece and then the screw on cap. Make sure it is finger tight, meaning you do want it tight, but don't "white-knuckle" it so tight that you warp the threads and render your waterbrush useless. (I bet you know how I know that!)

I print on Canson 90 lb. watercolor paper. This paper is lightweight and works in a laser printer nicely, and is a wonderful blending "canvas" for your art.

I printed the Ella image twice and the rose bouquet image twice. I sized the roses to be about the size of the heart she is holding, so that I could glue the roses on top of the heart. I just wanted her to be holding and smelling those beautiful roses, as if someone just gave them to her!

The markers that I use are Tombow brand, made in Japan. I have also used Stampin' Up! dye ink markers and have achieved a very similar effect. I believe there are other watercoloring markers out there, but I have not purchased or used any other brand.
Below is a picture of the Tombow marker colors that I used on this project.
What you should do first is cut out one of the Ella images with a die cut or special cutter so that your panel is ready. You won't want to handle your completely colored image too much with your fingers and tools after coloring, so it is best to die cut it first.

NOTE: My steps are typed ABOVE the photo I am describing.

1. Start coloring portions of the image that are on the inside first, and work your way out in all the other directions. Here, I started with her face.
As you can see below, I gently applied the 850 porcelain color with the brush tip of the marker, all the way around the perimeter of her face, and then I applied a stroke under each eye.2. Next, before blending, I used the 772 pink color to add a little circle for her cheeks.
3. Now it is time to see the blending magic happen! Gently squeeze on the reservoir of your waterbrush... and I do mean GENTLY. Trust me, the water will flow. Test it on scrap paper first to make sure you have an even gentle flow of water, and you may even want to practice your watercoloring a few times on scrap print outs before starting a special project .
Now gently stroke over the color you put down and blend toward the center of the face moving your waterbrush bristle in a slow sweeping back and forth motion. Go right over the circle cheek color and see it blend out. TRY TO KEEP YOUR BRISTLE ONLY WITHIN THE AREA OF COLOR YOU ARE WORKING WITH. This does require a steady hand, so practice, practice, practice! You don't want water to saturate the hair and other areas where you will want to add different colors to.
4. Continue all around the face and move your brush toward the center while stroking back and forth. TIP: Turn your project around as you need to blend the other sides, don't try to angle your hand differently. You will get a more even blending of color.
5. Wait just a few minutes for the face area to begin to dry out. I used the 991 blonde color and just applied strips of color along the hair sections, leaving some of it white.6. Next, add your hair contrast color, I used thee 947 color. I added it only to a few areas and still left some of the sections white. This creates a wider contrast of blended color in the end.
7. Apply the waterbrush, gently, and JUST THE TIP of it for skinny spaces, like these hair sections. Try to color each hair section individually. Watch as the 2 colors blend as you move the waterbrush tip along.
8. See below, the first hair section just beneath the brush is blended and I haave started the section above it.
9. Continue until all hair sections are blended, see below.10. Using Tombow 899 color, I outlined the dress as shown below.11. With the waterbrush, starting at the left, I quickly stroke from the bottom of the dress upward toward the heart and then back down again, all the while moving to the right. I am picking up the color each time I get to the top or bottom of the dress and pulling into and across the section.12. When you get to the right, I have pulled the color from the outlines through the middle of the dress section all the way to the right side.
13. For the roses, I have used colors 772 and 837. I have applied quick brush strokes of pink to most of the rose petals and then just small strokes of the rose color along some of the edges where I imagined darker colors of petals to be.14. Using the waterbrush, LIGHTLY touch the very tip to each petal section, one section at a time, and quicly yet smoothly brush each petal and watch the 2 colors blend and come to life right on the paper.
I cut out the 3 roses on the left so that I could use pop up adhesive on them over the main bouquet.
15. Color and blend the heart lightly. You won't need much color since the roses will be on top of them. Next, color the hair bows, legs and arms and shoes.
16. Add some color around your image to help "ground" it. I used the 991 yellow marker. This will help bring out your image and make it appear more dimensional and not just floating in space. Using a different color under the feet will help her appear standing on something solid, however, on my card, I chose to just use the same color all the way around.17. Use the waterbrush tip and start near the edge of the image. Use gentle back and forth motions and pull the brush outward as you move back and forth. Do this in approximately 1" long sections at a time and move around the image by turning the project, not your hand.18. I have found that using a can of spray clear acrylic sealer over a printed and colored digital image helps keep it from smudging or smearing with LIGHT handling. TIP: Use the sealer SPARINGLY. Use several quick and short sprays over the entire image, and hold the can at least 6-9 inches away from your project, and DO NOT saturate the paper. You only want a light spritzing of the sealer to come into contact on your project. You DO NOT want to make it glossy, you only want to see a finely spritzed shimmer over the image. If done properly, allow 5 minutes to dry completely before handling.

19. Using foam pop up adhesive, add the 3 rose section on top of the bouquet piece. This makes the bouquet look a little more full of roses.
20. Use a glue pen adhesive to secure the cut out bouquet down to the main image.21. See the close up angle below how the arms were added using a foam pop up sticky, and then using the glue pen on the tops of the arms. This actually gives the illusion that her arms are coming right off the card and over the bouquet.
22. As a final touch to add some color to the tag, I used the 991 marker and gently added a border around the edge, and then went over that line with the waterbrush, blending inward. You can achieve a similar effect by using a sponge and an inkpad, and sponging the edge.
The coloring is done now, and you can put your card or project together. Hope you found a little inspiration and maybe you will try soomething new today.

How to make a decorative paper cone!

Hello there! Today I am going to show you how to make a decorative paper cone! Now, the one I am making I am turning into an ornament and I made mine vintage. When you make yours, you can use any paper you want, and it doesn't have to be made into an ornament! Although, having a handle is nice....!
Ok, let's get started!

First, you need a circle. It can be any size. Depending on how big you want it. Mine is 8 1/2" diameter. When curled into a cone, this measures 5" tall. The smaller the circle, the smaller your cone. The largest circle nestability will actually make a cone that fits in the palm of your hand! Quite small! LOL! I used a vegetable bowl for my circle.

Ok, step 1: Trace your circle on your patterned paper. One thing to note: you will want to use thin designer paper. Thick paper doesn't hold very well. Unless you have really tough adhesive. Once your circle is traced, cut it out. Now, fold it in half to find the center. You are going to cut your circle in half.

Step 2: You are going to adhere sticky strip to the bottom of the half circle in the left corner on the side that will be facing OUT. Then you will turn it over and place a small piece of sticky strip to the same left corner. NOTE: On the first side (facing out), you will want to tuck in part of that sticky strip in the corner so that it doesn't show over the top of the cone.

{Sticky strip starting in the left corner and going out to the center. You want to make this long enough to wrap around the cone for better stick-togetherness}

{And flip paper over and adhere sticky strip in same corner, just not as long}

{It's tough to see, but I pushed the corner of the sticky strip into the other corner so that it won't show at the top of the cone when I put it together}

Step 3: Put your cone together! You are going to have to test this, to make it work for you. But, you're going to wrap your cone around, so that the "tucked in sticky strip" end wraps around towards the top and faces you. While the opposite side comes around and faces you on the bottom. Then wrap that around and up in front.

{This is where you're wrapping it around into the cone shape.}

{This is where your small adhesive side comes around and faces you. And you will wrap this around and up.}

{This is what your cone should look like once you adhere both edges!}

Step 4: Punch holes in the top sides if you are going to make a hanger out of this.

{I used a 1/8" hole punch here for wire.}

Step 5: Cover the bottom of the cone w/ a flower and little bell. IF YOU ARE MAKING AN ORNAMENT! If you are NOT making this an ornament, you can still cover it w/ a flower or do whatever you want. I used wire to attach the flower and bell to the inside

Tutorial - How to use digi-stamps with Cricut die-cuts:

This tutorial used Digital Stamps and photoshop brushes combo set available through AiF store

First, cut out shapes using Cricut in size desired for card or embellishment. I know the Expressions has a "center" cut option, but it is not always exact when dealing with smaller or odd shaped digistamps or regular stamps.

I print images out to the size desired on a regular piece of printer paper (great way to use paper in your recycle bin) - I make sure they will fit on the diecut shapes.

Using double sided tape, cover images with diecuts and run through printer a second time. Make sure to load the sheet in the same direction.

Here, the images have printed exactly where I want them on my diecuts. From here, finish assembling your embellishments or project. For these stamped diecuts, I have used the Jasmine oval frame cut at 3", the triangle with rounded corner using George cut at 2.75", and the purple cut is from Accent Essentials cut at 2.75".

A website Claiming contents of Aifactory as own!

It has come to my notice that a cliparts and digital stamp site is claiming content of Aifactory as its own . And claims that these are stolen. This is an open letter to the owner of that site to point out a single image as its ! and show the original at their store?! They are only afraid that Aifactory is coming up as a strong site with strong content .

The owner of that store started this bad word campaign against me and my store!. i was invited to this store to publish my contents i decided to create my own site and as a result they are spreading these words so my store wont flourish!!

I Dare her to take it to court ! she is a liar and please think twice before listening or paying attention to rumors like these!She has also spread a rumor that PCP had difficulty with our store , then Why pcp run a challenge with me? and why is my group still in PCP not banned or kicked? or is that her plan to call PCP and tell more lies there?
I am really angry with this person spreading bad words about me and the store !

Addition of New content Yes we are back to school

Yesterday was my creation day and i created a fun back to school set of illustrations!althoghy my drive is already full of back to school vectors , i wanted to create more fresh stuff here is a preview of the new set.

And I had to take off stuff of two of designers from the store as they had some issues from their associates which obviously they should have confirmed with before submitting to my store. AiF is very particular about copyright issues and when these images are submitted every time with each image submission artist signs a form which states clearly that they should have full right on the file submission and AiF will not be responsible . So hopefully in the future artists will read the terms of submission .
And we have a brand new section of Digital Stamps at the store now which is on Demand .Now you will be able to download single digital stamps along with an option to download the full sets Here is a new set addition to the Digital Stamps Section made up of all the little cute fairies ! this too is a set on demand how lovely.!

Thats not it here are two more new sets added check them out as well!

Yes! we are getting ready for the official launch of Aifactory - The design factor and we are seeking designers to join us on this quest . Please note designer seats are limited . It is not a site with 100 or 200 contributors we are seeking artists who are seeking opportunities online to build up a name and repute as a brand. And not all applicants will be approved but still it is worth it! . Designers are being taken in with a whooping 80% commission rate. AND artists who join us within August and upload at least 20 approved products are given comission rate of 90% till the end of Dec!! how cool is that?!! New Challenge: All About Babies!

Hi there! This is Ashley Newell, one of the sample designers for AiFactory. I'm here to issue you all a fun challenge with an AWESOME prize!

The challenge:

Make a creation that uses the theme "baby." You can make a card, layout, altered item, etc... You are not required to use anything from AiFactory, but we would love if you did! There's an entire Freebie section on the site that you can download and use. Just have fun! Then upload your creation to the AiFactory Ning group using the keyword babychal. The deadline to enter is August 27.

The prize:

One lucky winner will get this amazing Little Emma's Insy Winsy Nursery set! It's perfect for scrapbooking and card making! This set comes with 17 images and 4 backgrounds (you can use the backgrounds as designer paper!)

And here's my sample.

I made this with the Stitch-N-Sew Set. I used the butterfly outlines to make the designer paper. I used one of the pretty patchwork butterflies with an outline as the main image. I added some text for the sentiment. And then I finished with some cute little blue buttons from the set.

Can't wait to see what you all make!

Past week had been quite busy , we have been busy with uploading section of the store , we are open to designers wanting to submit their work and sell through the store and the store had been fighting with our team while we were setting up the system. Any way it is up and running and we welcome the designers who wish to sell through the store!

Having said that , a new addition to the categories is our blog couture! . Yeah check out the cool headers that we added and look out for the tutorial in case if you need help on how to implement these.
